SMAP singer held over naked park romp
SMAP vocalist Tsuyoshi Kusanagi was arrested on suspicion of public indecency after he allegedly stripped naked in a park in Minato Ward, Tokyo, at about 3 a.m. on Thursday, police said.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, Kusanagi, 34, divested himself of clothing at the ward-run Hinokicho Park in Akasaka in the ward.
A man living near the park called the police at about 2:55 a.m., to complain about a noisy drunkard in the park. Akasaka Police Station officers found Kusanagi sitting cross-legged on the grass, shouting at the top of his voice.
While being arrested he allegedly said, "What's wrong with being naked?"
According to the police, the pop group singer was inebriated at the time. He allegedly resisted arrest, to the extent that police officers had to roll him up in a vinyl sheet and bundle him into a police car.
Kusanagi's clothes were found in the park about a dozen meters away from where he was arrested, the police said.
The police breath-tested the allegedly sozzled songster Thursday morning, and found he had 0.8 milligram of alcohol per liter in his bloodstream. A person can be arrested for drunk driving with an alcohol level of of 0.15 milligram per liter under the Road Traffic Law.
Kusanagi said he had quaffed beer and shochu with a couple of friends at an izakaya-style pub. He was quoted by the police as saying: "I don't remember why I took my clothes off. I regret my actions."
The park is adjacent to the commercial complex Tokyo Midtown.
The police searched his home in Minato Ward later in the day and intend to send him to prosecutors on Friday, sources said.

Kusanagi is known for his approachable character and enjoys wide popularity across a wide range of ages.
He participates in six TV programs as a regular host for guest. However, TV stations and other organizations were busy Thursday discussing whether to broadcast programs featuring him that were made before his arrest.
Meanwhile, several companies have decided to pull commercials featuring Kusanagi.
The Association for Promotion of Digital Broadcasting had chosen Kusanagi as the public face in its campaign to promote digital terrestrial broadcasting.
The association has requested member TV stations, including NHK and commercial TV stations, to suspend its commercial featuring Kusanagi.
The Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry, which is responsible for promoting digital terrestrial broadcasting, has prepared 50,000 posters and 600,000 pamphlets featuring Kusanagi. The ministry is now discussing what to do with the posters and pamphlets, including the possibility of replacing them with new advertisements.
Kusanagi is proficient in Korean and is famous in South Korea. He costarred with Korean actress Choi Ji Woo in a commercial for the Japan Advertising Council's global environmental protection campaign produced jointly with South Korea.
A council spokesman said: "We're very disappointed and deeply regret the matter. The advertisement will be suspended."
Toyota Motor Corp. decided to end a TV commercial for a subsidiary car rental company featuring Kusanagi. Procter & Gamble Japan said it will temporarily suspend its commercial for Ariel detergent that features him.
Fuji TV was scheduled Thursday to film an episode of the variety show "SMAP X SMAP," which features all five SMAP members. The TV station said it is considering what to do with the programs in which Kusanagi participates, including the daily variety show "Waratte Iitomo!" on which Kusanagi was scheduled to appear live Friday.
TV Asahi said they will monitor how the investigation unfolds before deciding whether to broadcast the next program of its variety show "Pusuma," scheduled to be broadcast Tuesday.
